The Calgary Zoo has been a part of my life since I was just a wee little boy who wanted to be either a Ninja Turtle or a paleontologist. I used to go there with my family and demand we take an extensive tour through the Prehistoric Park, which normally included many imaginative dramatizations me fighting various dinosaurs.
Fast-forward to last week and I got to take a spin through the dinosaur park again (recently enhanced with animatronic dinos) this time being guided by the Calgary Zoo's resident wedding expert Aimsley Leece. She took me through to see some new wedding photography locations in the zoo and sprinkled in a few dinosaur fun facts along the way.
I have been fortunate enough to get to do two previous weddings at the zoo and I absolutely love it as a wedding venue. It has the space, resources and unique landscapes to please everyone involved with your wedding. It can provide an all-in-one solution for couples looking to make their wedding planning easier while still having a first-class day.
For me the greatest thing about a wedding at the Calgary Zoo is the abundance of fantastic photo locations all around the park that can be accessed without the need spend time transporting people between locations. This leaves extra time to do photos without taking time away from the reception. You might even get the oportunity for a unique photo with one of the animals.
There are beautiful lawns surrounded by flowers for the wedding ceremony and your reception can be in one of the four different venues with different character.
Each reception venue is paired with a different area for the ceremony. There is also spaces for cocktail hour and your guests can spend their free time between the ceremony and reception roaming the zoo... including the dino park!
There are four venues to choose from with varying sizes and different styles.
The Safari Lodge: Seats up to 280
The Conservatory: Seats up to 150 with tables on the dance floor, 130 with the dance floor clear. It is also an awesome spot for indoor photos on a chilly day or just for photos any time really.
Grazers: One of the newer on site venues is the seasonal restaurant Grazers which seats up to 80, but from June to the September long weekend this venue is only available after 6pm. It is a beautiful, intimate space with a sunny patio, which can be used for the ceremony and/ or the cocktail hour.
The BBQ Tent: The other seasonal venue is the BBQ Tent which seats up to 180 and comes with black chair covers.
