Engagement photos, e-sessions, couple sessions, pre-wedding practice sessions what are all these things and why would you ever want to do one of these photography sessions?!
Engagement sessions go by many names, but really they are about one thing, your relationship with you photographer. It wasn't very clear to me until Adele and I got our photographs taken and we had to be the subject instead of the photographer. I will be honest and say I was nervous to be on the other side of the camera and if it wasn't for the photographers making it super comfortable and fun, I probably would have wanted to wrap up the session quickly.
So this is truly the reason I believe in engagement sessions. This is the perfect time to get to know the wedding vendor you will be spending the most time with on your wedding day. Even getting to see how they work and what their finished images look like all before the wedding day! Being as comfortable as possible makes being photographed on your wedding day feel natural so you can be excited to make prints and albums that you can enjoy forever. You don't want to realize on your wedding day that the person you have chosen to capture your day has a real dud personality and doesn't make you feel comfortable at all!
Most people have very little experience being professionally photographed so having already worked with your photographer can take away some of the nervousness before the wedding day. You will be able to see the finished photos and how good you look and have one less thing to worry about leading into your wedding.
If there are certain, poses, angles or expressions that you are not very fond of this will also give you a chance to see that and suggest to your photographer that those are things that should be avoided in the wedding photos.
There are many added perks to doing the engagement session. You can use the finished photos to help your wedding planning process as well as using the photos on your wedding website or on save-the-date cards.
So there you have it coming from someone who doesn't love being in front of the camera. Also if you would like to bring a case a beer to take the edge off, Adele and I never mind. ;)
If you are interested in booking an engagement session contact me if you decide to book your wedding the cost of the engagement session can go straight toward the wedding photography investment. Like a wedding photographer test drive!
P.S. I read this hot tip the other day: get your makeup and/or hair test done the same day to see how they photograph and make sure there isn't anything unexpected about the way it photographs.
Hot tip, right?!
Here are a few of my favourite couple and engagement photos. Enjoy!
