Picking a wedding venue is one of the hardest decisions you'll have to make when wedding planning. There are so many great venues to choose from in and around Calgary, Canmore and Banff it can be hard to choose. It also feels like such a big decision because it can have an effect on all the rest of your wedding planning decisions such as your number of guests, the decor, the food and drinks!
This is all a long winded way of saying ' I feel your pain!'
It has always been part of my philosophy as a wedding photographer to try and make things easier for the engaged couples that I work with, so in that spirit, here my personal take on the backyard wedding.
A backyard wedding is something that has been around for a long time, but more and more couples are choosing to do a wedding at home as some traditions are falling out of favour. A backyard or at home wedding can be a great way for you to enjoy the company of a smaller number of guests in a familiar setting. It's a great wedding venue for people that love the do-it-yourself approach. You have lots of control over the decorations, food and drinks. There are tons of options for caterers and personal chefs that can help you pick the perfect menu.
There are plenty of different ways to have your wedding in your backyard. Some people opt for just the ceremony in the backyard while the reception is at a nearby spot which will handle the food and service. Others so just the reception and many decide to do the whole thing at home. All these options can help you save a little bit of money and allow you to have the exact wedding you want.
There are definitely some drawbacks to the backyard wedding. It isn't the ideal choice for every couple. You definitely have to be willing to put in more work. You have to be in charge of many of the things that a venue would normally take care of such as tables, chairs, cutlery, glassware etc. You want to make sure you consult with the wedding professionals you hire as much as possible to make sure you aren't forgetting something that may be vital on the day! A wedding planner or coordinator can be a huge help with this type of wedding!
A backyard wedding can be the perfect way to have your wedding and is definitely worth considering, especially if you are having an intimate wedding. The familiar setting can bring a special meaning to the day and being able to use the same place as your base for the whole day for getting ready, ceremony, cocktail hour and reception can take away some of the stress of a wedding timeline.
Whichever type of wedding you choose to have just make sure it is the day you want and that you hire the right experts to help you plan and execute your perfect day!
